Coldroom Spare Parts FAQs
Quick Answers to the questions we get asked the most.
Choosing the Right Part
How do I know which coldroom door handle I need?
Check for a brand name and model number stamped on the handle body, then match it to the same model or a compatible replacement. Most commercial coldroom doors use a Fermod 921, Kason 58, Jumbo 6000 or similar. You will also need to know your door offset, as handles are sized to fit it. If you are unsure, send us a photo on WhatsApp (07506 055 552) and we will identify it for you.
What is my coldroom door offset and why does it matter?
Do I have a magnetic gasket or a compression gasket?
Hold something steel against the seal: if it attracts, you have a magnetic gasket. Magnetic gaskets are common on rebated chiller and freezer doors and hold the door shut with an embedded magnetic strip. Compression gaskets are solid rubber profiles that need a firm, deliberate close to seal, and are typical on heavier hinged and freezer doors.
Can you identify a part from a photo?
Yes. Send a photo of the part, ideally with a rough measurement, to our WhatsApp parts identification line on 07506 055 552 and we will confirm the correct replacement. This is the fastest way to avoid ordering the wrong component.
Fitting and Maintenance
Can I replace a coldroom door handle myself?
In most cases yes, with basic hand tools. On a Fermod 921, for example, the handle is held by a single 17mm nut and the strike by two screws. Our step-by-step guide covers the full job. If the door has dropped or the frame is damaged, have an engineer look at it first.
How do I fit a replacement coldroom door gasket?
Measure and match the profile of the old gasket first, as most push into a channel or fix behind a retaining strip. Remove the old seal, clean the channel, and press or screw the new one in evenly, starting from the corners. Compression gaskets may feel stiff at first and need a firm door close until they bed in.
How often should I check my coldroom door parts?
Give the door a quick visual check monthly: frame heater (any ice?), gasket (tears or hardening?), hinges (sagging or cracks?) and the close itself. A check takes minutes and catches faults while they are still a cheap single part swap rather than a full door replacement.
Does a door frame heater need an electrician to install?
Frame heater kits must be installed by a competent refrigeration engineer or electrician. The heater tape runs at low voltage from a transformer and must never be wired directly to the mains. Complete kits include the transformer, connection box, heater tape and adhesive tape.
Common Problems
Why is my coldroom door not closing properly?
The four usual causes are a failed door frame heater, a worn strike or latch, a damaged gasket, or hinge wear. Close the door on a piece of paper: if it pulls out without resistance, the seal has failed at that point. If the gasket looks fine but the door will not latch, suspect the strike. Our diagnostic guide walks through each check.
Why is ice forming on my freezer door frame?
Visible ice on the outside of the frame almost always means the door frame heater has failed, and has likely been failing for some time. The heater is a low voltage element that stops condensation freezing on the frame. Left alone, ice build-up stops the door sealing and leads to damaged seals, warped frames and broken hinges, so get it checked immediately.
Why does my freezer door keep freezing shut?
A door that freezes shut points to a failed frame heater or warm moist air getting in through a poor seal. Check for ice on the frame first, then inspect the gasket for damage. Replacing a heater or gasket is far cheaper than the refrigeration problems that follow if it is ignored.
What temperature should a coldroom be?
A chiller coldroom should run at roughly 1 to 4°C and a freezer room at -18 to -21°C. UK food safety rules require chilled food to be held at 8°C or below, but running colder gives you a safety margin. If the room struggles to hold temperature, check the door seal and strip curtain before blaming the refrigeration plant.
Does my cold room need a pressure relief valve?
Freezer rooms need one; chillers usually do not. As air inside a freezer room cools it contracts, creating a vacuum that can make the door impossible to open and strain the panels. A pressure relief valve equalises the pressure automatically and is a small cost against the damage it prevents.
Why does my coldroom need a strip curtain?
A strip curtain cuts warm air ingress every time the door opens, which lowers running costs and reduces frost build-up inside. In busy kitchens where the door is opened constantly, it also helps the room recover temperature faster. Frost on the curtain itself is a useful early warning that warm air is getting in.
Ordering and Delivery
How quickly can you deliver coldroom parts?
Order before 3pm and most stocked parts are despatched for next working day UK delivery. We hold genuine parts from Fermod, Kason, Jumbo, Loheat, Thermal Dynamics and others ready to ship.
Do you sell genuine manufacturer parts?
Yes. We partner directly with established manufacturers including Fermod, Kason, Jumbo, Stuv, Dictator, Loheat, Thermal Dynamics, Rahrbach, Shelfspan and Craven. Where a genuine part is obsolete we will tell you and offer a compatible alternative.
What if the part I need is not on the website?
Get in touch anyway. Our range grows constantly and we can source most coldroom components on request, including obsolete and hard to find parts. Email websales@absolutecoldroom.co.uk or call 0333 335 5780 with details or a photo.
Returns and Refunds
Can I return an item if I ordered the wrong part?
Yes, in most cases. Standard stocked items can be returned within 14 days of delivery, provided they are unused, in their original packaging and the return is authorised before anything is sent back. Returns sent without authorisation may be refused. Full details are in our Returns and Refund Policy.
How do I return an item?
The quickest way is to complete our Returns Request form. We will reply within 2 working days to confirm whether the return is approved and give you return instructions. You can also email websales@absolutecoldroom.co.uk or call 0333 335 5780 with your order number. Return postage is your responsibility, and for items worth over £75 we strongly recommend a tracked or insured service.
Which items cannot be returned?
Bespoke and made-to-measure items cannot be returned or refunded: made-to-measure door gaskets and strip curtains, made-to-order transformers and heater mats, and custom-cut PVC or bespoke fabrication work. Sale items are also non-refundable. If you are not sure whether an item counts as bespoke, ask before ordering and we will confirm. See the Returns and Refund Policy for the full list.
Is there a restocking fee?
Not on standard stocked items. Products that have to be returned to the manufacturer, including Rivacold monoblock units, shelving systems, thermal strip curtains and special-order items, carry a 20% restocking fee. Manufacturers refuse unauthorised returns, so please submit a returns request first and we will arrange the correct return route.
When will I get my refund?
Once your return arrives it is inspected and we email you to confirm the outcome. Approved refunds go back to your original payment method and typically appear within a few working days. A partial refund may apply if an item shows signs of use or fitting, is missing its packaging, or is returned outside the 14-day window. Original shipping costs are non-refundable.
I bought as a consumer. Can I cancel my order?
Consumers buying online have a legal right to withdraw from most purchases within 14 days of receiving the goods, without giving a reason, under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. Bespoke and made-to-order items, such as gaskets cut to size and made-to-measure strip curtains, are excluded. To exercise this right, submit our Right of Withdrawal form and we will confirm next steps within 2 working days.
What if my order arrives damaged or incorrect?
Inspect goods on delivery and report any damage, shortages or errors within 48 hours. For pallet deliveries, note visible damage on the driver's paperwork before signing. We replace items that arrive defective, damaged or incorrect as quickly as possible at no cost to you. Details are in our Shipping Policy.
Installation Services
Do you install coldrooms?
Yes. Alongside the parts business we deliver full commercial coldroom installation and refrigeration services across the UK, backed by more than twenty years on the tools. We are Refcom, City & Guilds, CSCS and IPAF accredited.
Is a cheap coldroom installation worth it?
Usually not. Corners cut on panels, floors, doors and commissioning show up later as ice problems, failed seals, higher energy bills and early plant failure, which cost far more than the initial saving. A properly specified installation is the cheaper option over the life of the room.
