Fermod 528 Hands-Free Coldroom Fastener

The Fermod 528 is a hands-free fastening system for coldroom doors, designed to open with the elbow while carrying produce. It helps limit cross-contamination and provides a more hygienic alternative to traditional handles.

Compatible with both rebated and overlapping hinged doors, this fastener is interchangeable with the Fermod 521 series and features a three-way adjustable strike. The 528 includes an external handle and inner release handle and can be fitted to an existing 521 mounting plate — commonly used on Foster Coldstore doors such as those installed in new McDonald’s outlets.

Key features:

  • Hands-free operation using the elbow
  • Composite construction for strength and durability
  • Mechanism: zinc-passivated steel (standard) or stainless steel (HP version)
  • Invisible and tamper-proof screws
  • Suitable for left or right-hand doors
  • Soft, quiet operation

Fitting tips: To replace the existing handle, remove the green cap from the inner release handle and the internal screws. Detach the push rod and undo the 17 mm nut at the rear of the external handle using a socket or 10 mm hex key. Remove the two slotted screws above and below the latch to free the handle from the door. The existing fixing plate can be reused. Refit the new 528 handle in reverse order, adjusting the strike with an 8 mm spanner until the door closes firmly without strain.

If the door is twisted and won’t seal at the top or bottom edge, place a wooden block in the opposing corner and apply gentle pressure to realign it.
